A-Z Challenge: K. Knitting

Alice settled into her armchair and reached down beside her to the bag on the floor.    She smiled in anticipation.  The cool firmness of the knitting needles in her hands, the rough sensation of the wool against her palms, knitting really was the one thing that truly soothed her, put her at ease.  As always when she first picked up her knitting, Alice turned it over and over in her hands.  Is this the front or the back, front or the back?  She lays it down on her lap and stretches it out, admires the colours, the stitching, the neatness and the order of it.  So tidy.  Already, even before she has started knitting, Alice has relaxed.  Her mind already drifting away from her memories of the day, the heavy layer of weariness sliding from her shoulders.

Alice slides the needle into the first stitch and begins.  Only four more rows and all the pieces of the little jumper would be finished.   She smiled.  I can sew it together tonight, she thought and take it to her tomorrow.  It’s getting cold and the little one will need some warm clothes to get through winter.

The sound of a key in the front door broke Alice from her reverie, hello Darling.  She smiled at her husband.

“Hello Sweetheart.  What have you got there?”

“Do you like it?  It’s a jumper for Janie.  I made it for her birthday.  I thought we could take it to the cemetery tomorrow.”

He knelt down beside her and covered her hands with his own.  “It’s beautiful.”
